Candidates are also generally required to submit three letters of recommendation (including at least one from a religious leader), a personal statement, and transcripts from any institution of higher learning they’ve attended. Institutions that are specifically seminaries, generally do not require standardized test scores such as the GRE.
Traditional academic institutions have different requirements than seminaries. Seminaries generally require statements professing a specific faith or doctrine and also require students to respond to specific religious prompts as part of their personal statements. Moreover, seminaries will typically require that all letters of recommendation come from individuals with religious ties. They are instructed to speak to the personal characteristics and fitness of the candidate in terms of commitment to faith.
From these baseline standards, requirements are tightened. Institutions can be more specific or rigorous in their admission standards to include a bachelor’s degree in a related field such as religious studies. Programs designed for experienced religious leaders generally demand candidates to have leadership experience working for a religious organization.
