Frequently Asked Questions
What can I do with a master’s in education online degree with licensure?
A master’s in education with licensure provides several career pathways depending on the particular area of licensure and grade level. Licensure comes in a wide variety of areas such as specific subjects taught in school as well as areas like special education, literacy, music, physical education, and more.
Individuals with elementary licensure are able to teach in K-6 classrooms as the teacher of record covering all subjects. Elementary school teachers can also obtain licensure in special education including light and intensive interventions depending on what type of special needs population they want to work with.
Those with middle school licensure can choose to specialize in a subject area such as mathematics, science, social studies, history, and English. Additionally, teachers are able to earn licensure in areas such as literacy and special education.
In addition to elementary and middle school licensure, there are several secondary licensures that graduates with a master’s degree can obtain. Because secondary students learn from subject matter experts in a particular discipline, educators at this level can show mastery with licensure in a subject of their choosing such as social studies, history, biology, chemistry, English, foreign languages, mathematics, and more. Licensures allow educators to drill down into areas they enjoy teaching and that fit with their career paths.
What are the admissions requirements for master’s in education online degree programs with licensure?
Admission requirements vary greatly among master’s degree programs in education. There are several factors that influence admissions such as institutional ranking, type of educational master’s degree, and delivery method.
Top ranked institutions generally have the most robust admission requirements such as excellent GRE scores and high undergraduate grade point averages. Most educational master’s degree programs either do not require GRE scores or have waiver clauses that most applicants can satisfy. Top programs also differentiate themselves by requiring stellar undergraduate GPAs, most often 3.5 or above. In addition to these requirements, high-ranking programs also mandate three letters of recommendation, personal statements, bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, and excellent TOEFL scores for international applicants.
Mid and low-tier programs generally do not require a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited school and will accept an undergraduate degree from a nationally accredited institution. Additionally, test scores are either not required or can be waived if the candidate has minimal experience working in education or a solid undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or above.
Admission variance is also impacted by whether or not the degree is designed for current or aspiring educators. Programs for aspiring teachers have different admission criteria compared to those for current educators. Aspiring teacher programs can have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline. Degree programs for current or former educators insist on a bachelor’s degree in education along with a minimum standard of time spent teaching and educationally related passing exam scores.
How long does it take to earn a master’s in education online degree with licensure?
The length of time to complete a master’s in education online with licensure is largely predicated on a variety of factors such as program guidelines and structure and the individual student. The majority of programs show completion times vary between 12 months and six years. The average length of time to complete the degree is generally around two years.
Programs that offer initial licensure for those without a background in teaching can take longer as students must spend a considerable amount of time in the classroom working with students. Practicums and students teaching can take up to one entire year in addition to the required coursework.
Programmatic structure plays a role in how long it may take to complete a program. While most programs allow students to choose their enrollment level (full or part-time), some departments require students to attend full-time as part of a cohort where students take a prescribed number of classes along with their classmates. These programs are often completed within 1-2 years. Non-cohort based programs provide maximum flexibility and give students the option to finish quickly or take a longer amount of time. These flexible programs give students up to six years to complete and even allow students to take time away should they need to take a semester off.
What is the job outlook for individuals with master’s in education online degrees with licensure?
For this section, we have analyzed data provided by the United States Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Furthermore, the data is presented in a manner that separates findings into three categories including elementary, middle school, and high school.
The overall employment for elementary teachers with a master’s degree is expected to increase by eight percent from 2016-2026. For context, the overall occupational growth rate for all jobs is seven percent during the same time period. As enrollment in K-6 schools increases, so should the demand for credentialed teachers. Because many schools base hiring decisions on state and local budget allotments, some teachers may be laid off and others not replaced when they retire, which reduces employment growth.
The employment outlook for middle school teachers is also expected to increase eight percent from 2016-2026. Many of the same variables impacting elementary teacher hiring also dictate middle school occupational growth rate as well.
Occupational growth rate for high school teachers is expected to be eight percent during the ten-year period of 2016-2026. While this is the same overall percentage, a closer look at the numbers shows that individuals with licensure and endorsements in math, science, and English as a second language may have better job prospects due to a shortage of individuals with these credentials. Additionally, the data shows that job prospects are likely to be better in rural and urban areas compared to suburban districts.
How much will I make with a master’s in education online degree with licensure?
Annual salary data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that factors such as type of teacher, type of organization, and school location all play a role in salary.
Elementary school teachers earn an average salary of $58,230. When separated by public and private schools, BLS indicates public school teachers’ salaries compare very favorably to those teaching in religious or private schools ($59,420 compared to $46,410).
Middle school teacher salary data is very similar. The average middle school teacher earns $58,600 per year. The highest 10 percent earn more than $93,180 while the lowest 10 percent of earners make $39,090. Among elementary, middle school, and high school, secondary teachers earn the highest pay with an annual salary of $60,320. And similar to their elementary and middle school colleagues, public high school teachers earn more than their private school counterparts.
Teacher pay across all grades is greatly impacted by region. Northeast and Western states pay far more than Midwest and Southern states. New York comes in with the highest average teachers’ salary of just over $83,000 per year. Contrast that with southern states such as Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi, where teacher salaries can dip into the low $30k range per year. Across all grade levels, New York, Massachusetts, California, District of Columbia, and Connecticut pay the highest wages ranging from approximately $85,000-75,000 per year.
