Wesleyan University was founded in 1831 as a liberal arts facility. The student body is made up of 3,000 undergraduate students and 200 graduate students. Wesleyan University is one of the oldest institutions that originated with Methodist views. The university has been breaking historical barriers since 1870. During an era where classical studies were predominant, Wesleyan University opened its doors with a psychology department. Wesleyan continued to be a pioneer for change from the years 1872 to 1912 when it began admitting women to earn degrees in a co-education setting. Continuing the trailblazing tendencies, Wesleyan University’s alumni helped establish the Connecticut College for Women in New London. In the early 1960s, Wesleyan began inviting students of color to participate in their curriculum. Many of the students and staff who were attending Wesleyan during the Civil Rights Movement actively participated in the progressive efforts to make a change. For a while, co-education was suspended from Wesleyan University but by 1970 female students began to receive admission again.
