The degree programs offered by The College of Saint Scholastica fall into several categories: traditional undergrad, extended and graduate programs. Undergrads can earn their degrees on nine different campuses. Each campus offers the same majors, including art, global, cultural and language studies, social studies and secondary education, theology and religious studies and peace and justice studies. Undergrads can major in Catholic studies to work in ministry positions. The college also offers a communication major with concentrations in communication studies, film studies, media relations, and theater studies.
One of the programs available online and on-campus is the self-designed major, which lets students earn a Bachelor of Arts or Science after taking classes from different disciplines. The college’s computer information systems online major offers concentrations in business analysis, cyber security, custom design, health informatics, and software development. A health information management program is also available online, which goes over the basics of running a health care facility and managing the data of that facility. Other online programs allow students to focus on psychology, nursing, business management, marketing or organizational leadership.
There are a number of online and traditional programs for graduate students at The College of Saint Scholastica too. The college’s Master of Business Administration (MBA) offers a concentration in rural healthcare for those who want to work in rural settings within the healthcare industry. Some of the other majors for online grad students include project management, education, health information management, and health informatics. The College of Saint Scholastica also offers traditional degree programs for graduate students such as a social work program. Those who already have a social work degree can enter as an advanced standing student and graduate in less time and without doing as much fieldwork. The college offers other traditional graduate degree programs in physiology, occupational therapy, and leadership and change.
About The College of Saint Scholastica
The College of Saint Scholastica is a private college affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church. Established in 1892 as the Sacred Heart Institute, it opened after a group of Benedictine nuns arrived in Duluth and worked with the city to open a new school. The nuns helped the school grow so quickly that it had to find a new campus a few years later to make room for new students. It adopted The College of Saint Scholastica name in 1912 after becoming a junior college. During its junior college days, the college offered two years of training to students. The College of Saint Scholastica added bachelor’s programs in 1926 and opened its doors to male students in the late 1960s.
Though The College of Saint Scholastica has a main campus in Duluth, Minnesota, it allows students to study on five other campuses. Four of those campuses are in other areas of Minnesota, including St Paul and St. Cloud. The fifth campus is in Phoenix, Arizona. Also called CSS, the college established a virtual campus that now offers nearly as many degree programs as its physical campuses do, including a few hybrid programs with an on-campus learning component. More than 2,800 undergrads and more than 1,300 graduate and doctoral students now attend The College of Saint Scholastica.
The College of Saint Scholastica Accreditation Details
CSS has accreditation from the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) for its occupational therapy program and from the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) for its physical therapy program. Its nursing and education programs have accreditation also. The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) granted CSS the regional accreditation that lets its students apply for financial aid and transfer their college and university credits.
The College of Saint Scholastica Application Requirements
Prospective freshmen applying to CSS will receive a decision in three weeks or less. Admissions representatives working for the college process applications on a daily basis. Though students do not need to take foreign language classes in high school, they will need to take those classes through the college. CSS accepts transcripts that students and their schools submit through the mail or online. It requires that each transcript has the student’s name, a list of classes and grades received and a cumulative GPA. The college does not require a standardized test score but encourages students to submit a score if they think it will help them get into the school.
Graduate students applying to CSS must have a strong background in the same fields they want to study. The college’s occupational and physical therapy programs look for students who are physically strong and can handle the challenges of working with patients. When students fill out the application, they will need to list the name, phone number and email address for two references. The college will contact those references and ask if they recommend the student. CSS requires that prospective grad students submit a completed application and their official transcripts.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The cost of attending CSS is $37,622 per year for just the tuition that students pay. They also pay $660 in fees and a room and board charge of more than $10,000 a year. These costs only apply to undergrads though. Graduate students pay $430 per credit hour in an education or social work program. This rate rises to $880 per credit hour for nursing practice majors. Other graduate programs charge rates of $500 to $860 per credit hour.
Every undergrad at CSS receives at least one type of financial aid. The average award given to incoming students is more than $30,000 for the first year. Undergrads will use the CSS code on the FAFSA and wait for the college to process that form. Not only can they get grants and student loans via the FAFSA, but they can also work for the college in some capacity. Graduate students can also use this form to see if they qualify for one of the loan programs offered by the federal government. Scholarships are available for both freshmen and transfer students. Any student who has a close family member who attended the college receives a $1,800 scholarship. Merit scholarships award $14,000 to $25,000 each year to students based on their grade point averages in high school and their standardized test scores. All students enrolled in one of The College of Saint Scholastica can receive government and/or institutional financial aid.
