About Stevens Institute of Technology
Stevens Institute of Technology originated in 1870 when inventor Edwin A. Stevens’ wife Martha donated his bequeathed funds to open the first U.S. mechanical engineering school. In 1880, Professor Robert Thurston helped found the American Society of Mechanical Engineers here. In 1906, President Alexander Humphreys organized its ethical honor system. In 1911, SIT acquired the Stevens Family Castle designed by Alexander Jackson Davis. During World War II, Stevens Institute of Technology joined the V-12 Navy College Training Program. On May 29, 1945, the SS Stevens Victory was first sailed in the Institute’s honor from Baltimore. In 1959, Stevens added a Bachelor of Engineering to its graduate degrees. In 1967, Stevens Institute of Technology began admitting women into previously all-male classes. In 1982, SIT established the United States’ earliest personal computer requirement.

Stevens Institute of Technology Accreditation Details
On June 21, 2018, Stevens Institute of Technology received formal notification from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) Board of Trustees that the Level VI accreditation was extended through another 2026-27 evaluation visit under the seventh president, Dr. Nariman Farvardin, who earned the George Corcoran Award for Electrical Engineering Education. Located 93 miles down Interstate 95 in Philadelphia, this superb six-state Northeast Region accreditor is recognized by the U.S. Education Department and New Jersey Commission on Higher Education. Stevens Institute of Technology Application Requirements
Starting at Stevens Institute of Technology is classified “very selective” by Peterson’s because only 3,838 of the 9,265 Fall 2018 applicants were successful for 41 percent acceptance. First-year Ducks must complete at least 16 college-prep high school credits or a GED. The Accelerated Pre-Medicine Program strongly prefers AP courses in biology and chemistry. The Class of 2022 presented an average secondary GPA of 3.82. The middle 50th percentile had SAT scores of 600-690 for reading and 660-750 for math. Mid-range ACT composite scores were 29-33. Transfers are test-optional with 30+ non-remedial college credits and GPAs over 2.5. International students need a minimum 80 TOEFL iBT, 6.0 IELTS, or 550 SAT English mark. The Graduate School seeks four years of bachelor’s preparation at 3.0 or better GPAs. Engineering programs accept a median GRE Quantitative score of 161. Combined GRE test scores of 295 and higher are recommended. The Economist reports an average 570 GMAT score for the Stevens MBA.
Stevens Institute of Technology set freshman deadlines of November 15th for Early Decision or January 15th for Regular Decision. Accelerated Pre-Medicine cohorts must file CSS profiles by December 1st. Others can transfer through May 15th for Fall and October 15th for Spring.
