About Regis University
Regis University began in 1877 in New Mexico as Las Vegas College, founded by exiled Italian Jesuits as a boy’s preparatory school. In 1884, Bishop Machebeuf invited the school to move to Morrison, Colorado, where it was renamed College of the Sacred Heart. Three years after the move, John Brisben Walker, who had been educated by Jesuits, donated land for the school with a view of the Rocky Mountains and Flatirons. This is the location where the Northwest Denver Campus of Regis University still operates.
In 1922, the school was renamed Regis College in honor of St. John Francis Regis, the patron saint of lace-workers. St. Regis was known for providing stable incomes and independence to at-risk women and youth much like the school’s mission.
Loretto Heights College, founded by the Sisters of Loretto in 1918, closed its doors in 1988. Regis College absorbed three of the Loretto Heights programs, creating the Rueckert-Hartman College for Professions and the College for Professional Studies. This merger helped the school gain university status in 1991.
Today, enrollment at Regis University is over 7,900 with more than 76,150 alumni.
