Degree Programs Offered at Mercy College of Ohio

The degree programs available for students at Mercy College of Ohio include several associate programs in fields such as radiologic technology and nursing. Radiologic tech majors learn how to use ultrasound machines and other forms of technology as they work with patients. The nursing program includes a traditional version with daytime classes, a program in Toledo that includes evening and weekend classes and a third that allows students to take classes in Youngstown. In the Youngstown program, students will also take weekend and evening classes. Students can also earn degrees through the college in health information technology and health sciences.
All the programs offered by the college are health-related, including its bachelor’s programs in biology and health care administration. In the health care administration program, students take all their classes online and develop strong leadership skills. A bachelor’s program is available in nursing for students who want to get their licenses, which will require a passing score on a national exam. Another similar program allows students to complete a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in four years. Mercy College of Ohio offers two other bachelor’s programs online: an RN to BSN program and a medical imaging program.
The two graduate programs offered by the college are available online too. Students in the Master of Health Administration (MHA) features six semesters of classes that students take one at a time. None of their courses require any offline work. Those courses include Health Care Delivery in the United States, Health Policy and Law, Health Care Economics and Human Resource Management. The college’s Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program includes 36 credits of courses that students take over six semesters. Nursing majors will take college classes that include Leadership and Strategic Management for Advanced Nursing Roles, Strategic Management of Human Resources and Financial Management in Health Care.
About Mercy College of Ohio
The Mercy College of Ohio is a private college in Ohio that offers degree programs in nursing and other health fields. Established by the Sisters of Mercy in 1918, it opened as a small nursing school that trained nurses to work in northwest Ohio. Known as the Mercy School of Nursing originally, it later became Mercy College of Northwest Ohio. In August of 2011, the college changed its name to Mercy College of Ohio. Known as Mercy College for many years, it still uses that nickname today. Located in Toledo, the campus is close to Youngstown and offers programs for students in that city. The college announced a plan in 2019 with Bowling Green State University that will now allow students to take classes on either campus and get credit towards their degrees.
With an enrollment of more than 1,000 students, Mercy College is one of the largest health campuses in Ohio. Most of its students come from the northwest region of the state, though some students live in Michigan or other states and commute for their classes. The college is one of the nation’s only health schools affiliated with the Catholic Church. Its programs prepare students for working in facilities that have the same affiliation and to work with secular patients. Though the college offers only a small number of degree programs, each program includes internships and other opportunities for students to work with patients in the field.
Mercy College of Ohio Accreditation Details
Mercy College is one of many colleges in Ohio with regional accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Not only does this make it easier for students who want to transfer between two campuses, but it also allows those students to use the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The nursing, health information management, radiologic technology, and health technology programs all have accreditation also.
Mercy College of Ohio Application Requirements
Mercy College encourages any student with an interest in health care to apply to one of its undergraduate programs. They will need to submit the college’s application and pay the application fee as well as provide a high school transcript. This transcript must show that the student took college prep classes and received high grades in the math and science classes taken. The biology program requires an overall grade point average of 3.0 and grades of C or higher in all science classes. Students who received lower grades in their high school classes may need to retake those courses as prerequisites through the college.
The MHA program requires that students submit an application and pay their application fees. They also need to have a bachelor’s degree and provide transcripts that show which degrees they have and the grades they earned in their college classes. Other requirements include a statement of purpose of 1,000 words, a resume and the names and addresses of three professional references. The MSN program features the same requirements but also asks for an undergrad grade point average of at least 3.0 and a valid RN license. Those accepted into the program must pass a drug screening and a criminal background check too.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Undergrads at Mercy College pay $445 per credit hour when they take less than 12 credit hours of classes and $491 per credit hour when they take more credits. The college offers credit by examination programs that charge a $30 fee to take the exam and $55 for each credit awarded to the student. Students pay a $125 enrollment deposit after receiving an acceptance letter, which the college will apply to their total costs. Graduate students pay $649 per credit hour for all of their courses. Mercy College also charges fees each semester that it bases on the number of classes the student takes.
As long as a student submits the FAFSA and completes the college’s orientation, he or she can get financial aid. Mercy College bases aid on both the need and merit shown by each individual student. The Pell grant and subsidized and unsubsidized loans come from the federal government and are renewable each year. Students may receive work-study and scholarships too.
