About Maryville University

Maryville University originated in 1827 when Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne opened La Maison de Ville on St. Louis’ Convent Street to provide free women’s education. In 1864, the Religious Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus bought another 21 acres in Withnell’s Grove to expand. In 1872, it became Maryville Academy with an inaugural post-secondary class of 80. One decade later, the Maryville University name was adopted after its first doctorate.
