Linfield College is a liberal arts college and requires that all students complete four different types of study. They will take a seminar class that asks them to come up with questions for their peers and a diversity studies course to learn about other cultures. The college also asks students to take a writing class and complete six classes in the liberal arts core, which includes courses in decision making and critical thinking. During the January Term, students have the chance to take time off or take an intensive class on the campus. Many students spend this term doing a study abroad program.
More than 60 majors are available for undergrads at Linfield College, including some unique majors such as wine studies. Designed for students who want to work in vineyards, it looks at what conditions are best for growing grapes and how different flavors can work together. Students who are over the age of 21 can take some wine tasting classes through the college. The digital art major is also unique and helps students learn the basics of creating art that uses digital techniques. Other majors include economics, gender studies, management, data science, and applied physics.
The online accounting majors allow students to take Introduction to Accounting, Accounting Principles and other classes offered on the Linfield campus through the college’s online system. The business information systems program is also online and teaches students how to start and run a business. Those who want to write and publish books can enroll in the college’s online creative writing program. Not only does it include literature classes, but the program also encourages students to write and submit work that they may want to publish.

About Linfield College
Linfield College offers degree programs for students through several traditional campuses and an online campus. Established in 1858, it is a private college that opened after Oregon City College opened in the 1840s. The Oregon Baptist Educational Society helped found that first school, which led to locals calling for a similar college in McMinnville. Known as a Christian school because the Christian Church backed it, the college faced troubles that led to the Baptist Church taking over its operations and renaming the campus the Baptist College at McMinnville. The wife of Reverend George Fisher Linfield donated the college a large sum of money for its expansion, which led to the school naming itself in honor of that couple in later years.
While the college still has a connection to the American Baptist Churches USA, that is more of a symbolic affiliation today. It does use religious orientation or beliefs in its admissions policy and accepts all students equally. The Portland campus of the college works with a local hospital and is responsible for the Linfield nursing programs. Students attending that campus have opportunities to work at the hospital. US News and World Report named Linfield College the best comprehensive college in the western region for six straight years.
Linfield College Accreditation Details
Linfield College has accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) for its nursing programs and from the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) for its music programs. The Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) awarded full accreditation to Linfield also. This is the regional accreditation that lets any student who wants to get a financial aid package complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to get that aid. Students can also use this aid to transfer credits to the college.
Linfield College Application Requirements
The early action deadline of November first lets prospective Linfield students apply and know if the college accepted them by the middle of January. Those students then have until the beginning of May to make a decision and put down an enrollment deposit. The Linfield Scholarship and Visit Weekend allows students to schedule a visit to the Oregon campus and find out about their financial aid options. Students can also enter a contest for the chance to win a $5,000 scholarship. The college asks students to sign up for the weekend by the beginning of December. There is also a priority deadline of February first that lets students receive an answer by the beginning of April.
Though Linfield does not charge an application fee, it asks that students apply via the Common Application and answer the member questions on it. Those questions let students explain why they picked this college and what they hope Linfield can do for them. The application also includes a personal essay that lets students show their writing and organization skills. Prospective students will also need to submit a recommendation letter or form completed by a high school teacher, a school report and an official high school transcript.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Linfield College undergrads pay $22,031 per semester or $44,062 per year in tuition and fees. Those who sign up for the January Term also pay $260 per credit hour for the special programs and classes that are available. Students also pay room and board charges of $12,670 to live on the Linfield campus. This price includes a meal plan that gives them unlimited meals on campus and flex dollars that they can use in other stores. Linfield students must have health insurance from their parents or other sources or purchase coverage through the college for $2,875 each year.
The first-year scholarships offered by the college go to students who submit a full application and the FAFSA. They will also need to show merit, which is why the college recommends that students submit a standardized test score, which it usually includes as an optional step. Some scholarships give students $14,000 to more than $20,000 a year. Those who receive scholarships can qualify for other aid too, including work-study that provides employment opportunities for students, grants, and loans for both students and their parents. There are also scholarships available for students in the marching band and those who play instruments, but those programs require that students audition for the available funds. Both online students and those enrolled in the traditional degree programs offered by Linfield College can qualify for several types of financial aid.
