About Golden Gate University

Golden Gate has been educating students in the San Francisco, California area for more than 115 years. The college first opened in the 1950s as a night school, and by 1901, it was the third school in the Golden State to train lawyers.

Back then, the school was known as the YMCA Evening College, though it changed its name to Golden Gate College in 1923. Over the years it added more areas of study including adding the School of Foreign Trade and The School of Automobiles in 1914, the School of Insurance in 1927, and the Graduate School of Accountancy in 1932.

Another thing that Golden Gate College did was open the first evening MBA program in 1950, and it established its graduate school in 1965. By 1972, the school became known as Golden Gate University, and it created satellite campuses in Los Angeles, California and Seattle, Washington.

Golden Gate University is also well known for starting one of the first online learning programs in the country, which was established in 1996, and it continues to be known for its online degree programs.

Today, Golden Gate University’s main campus is located in San Francisco, and it has two satellite campuses in Seattle and the Silicon Valley. Golden Gate University Application Requirements

Application requirements to Golden Gate University depend on the type of degree the applicant is interested in pursuing. To be considered for admission as an undergraduate at the college, applicants must apply with a 2.0 GPA from a community college or other university or must apply with a 3.0 GPA from high school.

Applicants who are applying as a non-traditional student must also submit a resume showing a minimum of three years of professional work experience and a statement of purpose, which explains why they believe that Golden Gate University is the right school to meet their personal and professional goals. In some cases, a personal interview is also required.

All undergraduate applicants to Golden Gate University must provide an application along with a $55 application fee. Official transcripts from high school and former colleges are also required. Students are not required to submit SAT or ACT test scores. In cases where an applicant might not meet all of the application requirements, the school encourages them to submit a personal statement with their application. This should explain the reasons for not meeting the requirements and the applicant should write about their commitment to future academic success.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition at Golden Gate University is charged by unit. New students are currently charged at $462 per unit, and active duty military personnel pays $250 per unit. There are also various fees that students must pay including a technology fee and commencement fee. In 2017, the average cost of tuition was just over $16,000 for undergraduate students.

Graduate tuition is charged based on the program and the school. For 2019, graduate courses at the School of Business and School of Accounting, for example, is $1,090 per unit. Courses at the School of Taxation, however, is $1,250 per unit. Golden Gate University also offers special rates for the Doctor of Business Administration program at $1,175 per unit and Executive Master of Public Administration program at $825 per unit. Students going into the Executive MBA program are charged $75,000, which covers all costs. Students at the School of Law pay between $1,700 and $1,800 per unit, depending on the program.

Financial aid is available for those who qualify. Accepted students must fill out the FAFSA form to determine what eligibility they might have, and there are a number of federal loans and grants that students might be able to get.
