About Duke University

With the Duke University campus covering more than 8,500 acres, Duke’s physical size makes it one of the largest universities throughout the nation. It also has almost 15,000 students and is a top-ranked school throughout the U.S. based on student body.

Duke is well-known for its dedication to research and academics. It offers a wide selection of graduate and undergraduate degrees, all designed to prepare students for a career in academia, industry, and research.

The acceptance rate at Duke University is only about 11 percent, which means it is a highly selective school. In fact, almost all entering freshmen have to be in the top 10 percentile of their high school’s graduating class to get accepted.

The college offers almost 100 undergraduate majors in the sciences and arts, as well as engineering. It also provides students the ability to design interdisciplinary majors. Along with the 98 undergraduate major options, Duke also offers 50 minor options and a wide variety of graduate programs, as well.

Duke University Application Requirements

Duke University offers many opportunities for undergraduates and graduates. It focuses on students that are ready to handle those opportunities, so it looks for people with curiosity and ambition, energy, and talent.

The process for application is that the student must fill out all parts of the application and have official high school transcripts sent to the school. The Admissions Committee then considers the personal and academic qualities of every student. The Committee looks at any challenges the student faced, how he or she rose above those challenges, and what opportunities were presented.

Primarily, Duke University looks at six factors, including:

  •  The student’s academic program rigor
  •  Academic performance based on grades in a variety of courses
  •  Letters of recommendation required from a counselor and two teachers
  •  What extracurricular activities the student participated in
  •  Quality of expression and thought in the essay for application
  •  Appropriate standardized test scores

Tuition and Financial Aid

While Duke University doesn’t put much focus on the cost of an excellent education, it recognizes that students need to know how much that education is likely to cost and what means are available to help offset the cost.

The estimated attendance cost for the 2017-2018 school year included $55,960 in tuition and fees, $15,944 for room and board, $3,466 for personal expenses and books, making it a total estimated cost for attendance of $75,370 for the school year.

While students are likely to be shocked at the high price of attendance, Duke is committed to ensuring that students with the capabilities and drive have the option of attending through financial aid programs. Financial resources, or lack thereof, should not pose a barrier to enrollment. Therefore, the College pledges to meet the financial need of all students. For permanent residents, US citizens, and undocumented/DACA students, the admissions policy is need-blind, which ensures that all applicants are accepted solely based on their merits, regardless of whether or not they can pay for college. If a student is admitted to Duke, it makes it possible for all students to attend.

Need-based aid is available to any student and Duke can provide 100 percent of the cost if the need is demonstrated, documented, and proven. Students can apply for need-based aid at any time during their four years of school at Duke.

Merit-based financial aid is also available. Many foundations, individuals, and corporations have offered merit scholarship for students attending Duke. Most of these scholarships are based on achievements, though some do consider financial need. Students must pay close attention to deadlines and applying guidelines.

Athletic scholarships are also available, except for wrestling and fencing. ROTC scholarships and aid are also available.

Students are also permitted to take out appropriate Federal loans. Prospective students who need financial aid help should fill out a FAFSA form online. Duke University makes it easy for prospective students to get the financial help they require to earn an education.
