About George Fox University

George Fox University is a private university that has a religious affiliation with the Northwest Yearly Meeting of Friends. Established in 1885 as the Friends Pacific Academy, a small group of Quakers oversaw the operations of the academy and helped it become Pacific College six years later. During its college years, the school offered two-year degree programs, which became four-year bachelor’s degree programs in the 1920s. To honor George Fox who started the Quaker faith, the college changed its name to George Fox College and then George Fox University, which occurred after it merged with a nearby seminary. Also called GFU, it is now the second biggest university in Oregon.

Located in the city of Newberg, GFU offers opportunities for students at locations in and around that city. It has a number of teaching sites for education majors that help them do fieldwork and learn more about teaching others. The university selects up to 25 new students every year for research projects and provides them with the equipment and funds that they need for those projects. Forbes ranked GFU within the top 100 of all American colleges, and U.S. News and World Report ranked the university highly in terms of the study abroad programs it offers for students. GFU saw its enrollment increase significantly through the 1980s and later to now include more than 3,800 students.

George Fox University Accreditation Details

GFU has accreditation for its music, physical therapy, nursing, education and psychology programs from organizations such as the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). It also has regional accreditation from the NWCCU, which oversees colleges in the northwestern United States. With accreditation from this organization, the university can award financial aid to students and accept the credits they already have.

George Fox University Application Requirements

The undergrad and adult programs offered by GFU do not have application deadlines because the university allows students to start their studies when they want. Though it does not have a minimum GPA requirement, most GFU freshmen have a high school GPA of at least 3.0. Those students also scored a minimum of 20/1,000 on the ACT/SAT. The university gives students the option of using a paper application, its online application or the Common Application. Students must make sure that they completed each section on the applications they use and then send both their high school transcripts and test scores to GFU.

Graduate students must make sure that the university receives their applications by the deadlines that each department sets. This is usually around the first of July for the fall semester and the beginning of November for the spring semester. Students need to either have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or the same GPA over the last 60 credits of classes they attempted. They will complete the application, which asks for a resume and a short response to an essay question. Students can also upload the contact information for their references on the application. Some programs require that students submit a character form and that they sign an ethics document. Education majors will also provide copies of their valid teaching licenses.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Money Magazine included GFU on its list of the “Best Colleges for the Money” because of its low tuition rates. Students pay a $40 application fee and a $300 enrollment deposit when they apply and get accepted by the university. Undergrads also pay a total of $35,500 each year in tuition and another $520 every year in fees. GFU offers room and board packages for $5,625 each semester. Part-time undergrads pay $1,080 per credit hour for their classes and a smaller amount in fees. Graduate students pay a fee of $135 each semester and $684 per credit hour in tuition.

Nearly 30% of students attending GFU come from households that make less than $50,000 a year, which qualifies them for a significant amount of financial aid. Even students who come from wealthier families can get some aid though. To get that aid, students must file the FAFSA and show on that form that they will attend this university. Merit scholarships provide students with up to $16,000 in funding every year, while the scholarships based on their need can give them more than $15,000 a year. There are also jobs and student loans available for all types of students. Those enrolled in the online programs offered by George Fox University can get financial aid too.
