In these difficult economic times, students of any profession must scour the internet for as much funding as they can find if they want to graduate with a minimum amount of debt. Debt can be a major obstacle for graduating students and scholarships are one of the best ways to mitigate that issue. Nurses fresh out of college face many obstacles. Finding employment, even with a nursing shortage, can be difficult with a lack of practical experience. Sometimes finding the right job just takes time, and it’s important to minimize the amount of money you borrow for school, because it lessens the immediate financial burden on you at graduation.

There are numerous nursing scholarships available at all levels of nursing. Many are awarded by state and local sources. Some are administered by national organizations. Knowing what kind of nurse you want to be when you start school can help you find funds. Many nursing organizations are for specialized nurses, and reward nurses that are members, even members that aren’t licensed, for their intent to pursue a nursing career in their specialization.

This list is comprised of 75 fantastic nursing scholarships. Here you will find scholarships of every kind including: specialization specific, region specific, national scholarships, essay contests, private scholarships, corporate scholarships, and government programs. Do not be discouraged if there is not a scholarship from your state on the list. There are plenty of national scholarships here, and many of the state specific scholarships (which are numerous) did not make it on the list. But they are out there. Use the state scholarships on this list as a guide that will show you what to look for in your own state.

As far as state and local scholarships are concerned, the best way to find them is to talk to your financial aid officer, do some of your own research, and talk to local chambers of commerce, or a high school guidance counselor. The more specific you are about what you want to do, the more scholarships you will find.

One type of scholarship every nursing student should be on the lookout for is the hybrid scholarship/loan from local medical care institutions. These scholarships are offered in exchange for a commitment from the student to work at their institution for a certain number of years. If the student decides not to work at the institution after graduation, then the scholarship becomes a loan that must be paid back. A lot of people are averse to this kind of commitment, but in this economy it can be looked at as a bonus. Not only are you committing to the organization, but they have an implicit commitment to you so long as you meet their standards so it is a fantastic opportunity to transition straight into a job after graduation. An almost guaranteed two years of experience right out of nursing school isn’t something at which any nursing student should turn up their nose.

The scholarships on this list are numbered 1-75 but this is not a ranking, it’s just for convenience. 1-50 are undergraduate scholarships, and 51-75 are graduate and doctoral scholarships. Some of the scholarships take applicants from any level. Basic eligibility criteria is included in the short descriptions of each scholarship, but those interested in the scholarship should read the full eligibility criteria from the organization’s website to confirm they meet the requirements.
